One of the major misconceptions regarding ab training is you have to do a ton of crunches or sit-ups to see any results.  The exact opposite is actually true…

Working out your abs is like any other muscle group – you need high intesity, low volume training with plenty of rest for muscle recovery.  This means if you can easy do 20 reps of a certain ab exercise, you need to add some weight to the exercise to increase intensity and reduce your rep count.

Another common misconception of six pack abs is that if you only workout your abs, you’ll achieve them.  While this may make sense, people forget that the stomach/ab region is often the are of the body that has the highest fat content.  You could do ab exercises until your blue in the face, but if you have a significant amount of fat on your stomach, those ripped abs aren’t going to show.

This is the case with many people.  The muscle is there, it just can’t be seen through the layer of fat on that person’s belly.  In order to have a visible six pack, you need to work on reducing that belly fat and allowing those ripped ab muscles to show through.

At first, one may consider running on a treadmill or doing a ton of cardio work to shed the fat.  This is the advice given by a lot of fitness experts and even doctors, but it isn’t entirely true.  Cardio is great for maintaining a healthy heart and respiratory system, but for burning calories it’s not so great unless you’re a long-distance runner or someone who does cardio for hours on end.

Your best bet to shed that extra fat is address your diet.  There are a ton of calorie intake calculators out there that can advise you (depending on your sex, age, height, and weight) on how many calories you should be taking in daily to reduce your fat.  If you’re taking in less calories than your body burns, you will lose fat.  Combine that with a rigorous weight training program, and you’re going to supercharge your body into a fat loss machine!

Hopefully I’ve helped shed a little light on some six pack ab myths that have been floating around for decades.  Six packs are not easy to achieve, or else everyone would have them.  However, if you stay determined and eat and train right, you’ll achieve those ripped six pack abs in little to no time!
