There’s something about an V-Shaped upper body that just looks right. Broad, wide shoulders, wide lats, and a slim waist. It’s the ultimate package. Curious on muscle workout program to get your V on? Read on my friends…

Starting at the top, the first thing that needs to be addressed is obviously the shoulders.  A wide set of shoulders is a must to top off the V-shape body, no matter what way you slice it.  Since I recently touched on shoulder workout routines to get you broad shoulders, I won’t go into further detail.  If you missed my 3-part series on shoulder workouts, feel free to take a look here: Part I, Part II, Part III.

The being said, lets look at the #1 muscle group which is responsible for the V-shape.  I’m talking about the lats!  Lats are the muscles that run down your outer back, just on the backside of your rib-cage.  I’m sure you’ve seen bodybuilders out there with lats so huge, they look like wings.  You can really get a nice taper on the back if you work your lats properly.

People often ask, “What’s the best exercise for my lats?”  Hands down, it’s the pull-up – hard to believe right?  While not everyone can actually perform a pull-up, everyone knows what it is.  Performing this simple exercise will put you on the fast track to achieving nice, wide lats.  If you’re one of the gifted people who can do more than 8 pull-ups in one set, get yourself a weight-belt and suspend a 25lb plate from yourself to increase the intensity.

If you can’t do pull-ups, fear-not, there is an alternative exercise you can do to build your muscle strength up to the point of being able to do pull-ups.  This beginner exercise is the lat pull-down.    If you’ve been to a gym, you’ve most likely seen it in action.  The exercise consists on sitting on a bench, and pulling a bar connected to a cable machine downward (think of it like a seated pull-up).  This exercise isn’t as effective as a standard pull-up, but doing lat pull-downs will get you on the road to being able to do pull-ups.

The last muscle group to top off the ultimate V-Shaped body are the abs.  Specifically the obliques, which are your ab muscles which run down the front sides of your stomach.  Toning and building these will tighten in your mid-section, giving you the ripped look you’ve been looking for.  Check out the article I’ve written on Ab training.
