Home Gym Workout Routine – Part II (What not to use)
While it is very much possible to perform a muscle workout without any equipment or weights (keep an eye out for an upcoming article regarding this), working out with resistance such as weights or bands, offers quicker results and can help you track your progress. In this section, I will be discussing different types of fitness equipment and household tools you can use to get the most out of your home gym workout routine.
There a quite a few people out there who perform daily home gym workout routines with nothing but items that you’ll find around the average house. While this is a very cost-effective way to get a workout, you open yourself up to the possibility of injuries as well as dampen the potential results you can get out of your muscle workouts. Fitness equipment is specifically designed to achieve the maximum results from certain exercises, while keeping the risk of injury to a bare minimum. A good example of this is the dumbbell – it’s ergonomically designed to fit in your hand comfortable, as well as offer a variety of ranges of motion to get the most out of it. People have been known to use buckets full of water to try to do the same muscle workout as a dumbbell curl. While it can help build muscle, it can be very dangerous – what if the bucket handle breaks? You might end up with a smashed toe, or worse. This is just one example of many, of things you should be aware of.
I’m not saying all household items are useless for your home gym workout routine, for example a broom stick can be used as an excellent stretching tool for your shoulders and chest. Another example is steps – almost every house or apartment in the world has at least one step in or near it. This step can be used for aerobic activity and can save you some money over buying one of those fancy colored steps you see being advertised on late night infomercials. People paying for a step, come on, seriously?
In the next section I will be discussing some basic home gym fitness equipment, and offer my recommendations. Be sure to check back to see the next article in this series
